How Many Digits Do We Need?

We don't need very many for real-world calculations:

  • NASA's JPL uses only 15 digits (3.141592653589793) for high-precision space navigation
  • Using just 40 digits we can calculate the circumference of the entire observable universe to the precision of a single atom!

So, why do people calculate trillions of digits? Mainly to test supercomputers, check for hardware errors, or just for the fun of breaking world records!
